The music of Sababa 5 centers around mediterranean rhythms and melodies, together with sounds from the world of rock and psychedelic funk, creating a real mix of East and West.
Sababa 5 was formed by a group of musicians known for their work for some of Tel Aviv’s top artists/vocalists, such as Gili Yalo, Ester Rada, and Liraz Charhi, as well as with famous groups like Hoodna Orchestra, Tigris, and Kutiman Orchestra. With members’ influences that range from wrecking crew recordings from the ’60s to analogue Middle Eastern music from the ’70s, the sound of the band constantly revolves around different genres and rhythms, yet, at its core, ‘Sababa 5’ is always a groove-centric band.
The main source of inspiration for the band are “lehakot ketzev” (beat groups) from Israel played innovative combinations of psychedelic rock mixed with Mediterranean Arab music during the 60s and 70s. The fusion of East and West and the new spirit brought by the band members create a unique mix of styles that crystallize into a new and original work.
In the summer of 2022, the band released a four-song EP collaboration with Israeli Yemenite singer Shiran Ztfira. The EP was released under Batov Records, played on radio stations around the globe and got a great response from the audience. In September, the band finally delivered their long-promised and self-titled album of original instrumentals, built around the band’s distinct mix of Middle Eastern psych, funk and disco groove. Following the album’s release, the band went on a European tour, including a show at the Trans Musicales Festival in Rennes.
At the beginning of 2023, the band released a new live video session that took place in Anis Auditorium in Jafa. Later this year, the band will release new singles and collaborate with different artists as well as a new studio album planned to be released in the fall.
