Having studied Hindustanti classical music in Pakistan as a teenager under the Shaam Chaurasi Gharana school – a lineage that stretches back 600 years – Sameer Khan founded Karma Sheen in London in 2014 to unite his passions for western psychedelia with his South Asian musical heritage.
Formed alongside sitarist Rod Bourganos – who himself studied the instrument in Brazil and Singpore – and joined by childhood friend Amad Chima and bassist/visual artist Grisha Grebenikov, the band have in recent years excelled in the UK gig and festival circuit. After making appearances at Shambala, The Great Escape, Boomtown and Brighten The Corners, the band have also earned support slots Dur Dur Band Int., Os Mutantes, Say Say She, YĪN YĪN, WITCH and Sarathy Korwar. Notably, Khan also appeared as a guest of Nabihah Iqbal on the Gilles Peterson show last July to feature Karma Sheen’s work. The International Hindustani Classical Psychedelic rock group stemming from Pakistan have quickly cemented their reputation as one of the most unique bands currently on the circuit.
